Sang Soo (“Sangsoo”) grew up in Busan, South Korea, and received his B.S. and M.S. in Life Sciences from Sogang University. His research journey began with studies of ion channel physiology before moving to California to pursue a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of California, Riverside. There, he investigated the neural and hormonal regulation of innate behaviors using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model system under the mentorship of Michael Adams.

He later joined Mark Wu's laboratory at Johns Hopkins University as a postdoctoral fellow, where he investigated the neural circuit and molecular mechanisms underlying sleep homeostasis in flies and mice.

His laboratory investigates the neural circuit and molecular mechanisms that transform internal states into behavioral responses, using sleep homeostasis as a model system.
